Renter, exposed-stone wall, fragile drywall, exacting landlord: reasons not to drill are many, and the frustration of ending up with an empty-walled apartment is real. The idea that a bare wall is the only alternative to a nailed one is false. Several solutions really hold, provided you know the limits of each and follow a few technical rules. Here is the full arsenal, ranked by supported load and by durability.
First and foremost: test. What works on matte painted walls does not necessarily work on papered ones. What holds in winter can fail in summer when humidity rises. Always try in an inconspicuous corner before committing to a full composition. And keep packaging: in case of failure, you keep the warranty.
Load < 1 kg: Command strips and putty
For unframed posters and very small formats (30x40 in a thin aluminum frame, under a kilogram), 3M Command strips are the reference. The manufacturer guarantees residue-free removal if installation is correct: alcohol-cleaned surface, application on paint dried for at least two weeks, 24-hour wait before hanging. Removal is done by pulling the tab slowly downward, parallel to the wall, never perpendicular. That technique, properly followed, leaves no trace in 95 percent of cases.
Load 1-3 kg: Tesa Powerstrips
For 50x70 wood-framed pieces (about 1.5-2 kg) and 30x40 walnut or solid oak frames (1 kg), Tesa Powerstrips Picture Hangers hold. The principle is the same as Command: clean smooth surface, firm application, wait. The rated capacity (up to 2 kg per strip) is honest if conditions are met. Beyond that, plan two pairs of strips per frame. Limit: these strips do not hold on textured walls (rendered, thick wallpaper, rough plaster), damp walls, or very matte porous paints that tear off on removal.
Load 3-5 kg: picture rail and rod
For 70x100 wood-framed pieces and 50x70 with thick glass (3-4 kg), adhesive strips reach their limit. The professional solution is the picture rail: a top-mounted track with thin metal cables and sliding hooks rated up to 30 kg. Artiteq and Stas dominate this market in Europe. A complete kit for a 3-meter wall costs 80 to 150 euros. The rail itself requires a few light anchors, but the final removal leaves only two discreet holes at the top of the wall, easily filled before move-out.
In Parisian Haussmann apartments, the picture rail often already exists: a plaster molding at mid-wall height, designed precisely to hang paintings without drilling. If your apartment has one, it is a gift. Screw two hooks into the molding (without touching the wall), attach cords or cables, and you can recompose the wall every six months without leaving a trace.
No wall fixing: shelves and easels
An alternative to any wall fixing: picture shelves that support frames leaning against the wall, like photos on a mantel. Works very well for 30x40 and 50x70 compositions. The shelf itself fixes with two screws (worst case), or rests on adhesive supports (Command, Tesa). The look is more contemporary, more modular, and gives the advantage of swapping pieces every week without unhooking anything.
A display easel sets the frame on a piece of furniture (bookcase, console, sideboard, secretary). For a single 30x40 or 50x70, it is an elegant solution that bypasses the wall question entirely. The easel must be proportioned to the frame: too small, the frame tips; too visible, it steals the show from the poster. Brass or weathered-wood easels are the most discreet.
A smart renter wall is a wall that can both disappear and transform itself. Every solution here preserves that double requirement.
To avoid at all costs
- Pushpins on framed posters: they cannot hold the frame mass and bring the whole thing down.
- Industrial double-sided tape on paint: it tears large patches on removal, more damage than a well-placed nail.
- Neoprene or contact glue directly on the frame: irrecoverable.
- Window suction cups on painted walls: they hold only on non-porous surfaces, and drop as soon as temperature shifts.
- Bulk supermarket adhesive hooks in 50-packs: rated capacity is almost always overstated.
- Staples directly into plaster: they widen over time and crack the drywall.
At Montmartre Poster, all frames available from the frames and accessories page are designed to be hung by the systems above. The full selection covers every subject in compatible formats, from light 30x40 (perfect for Command) to heavier 70x100 (picture rail recommended).
